Seoirse and Pamela

We often give birth to customers’ lofty designs – but Seoirse and Pamela Mckinney wanted us to help give birth to her daughter (in the roof space).

She and her husband Seoirse (it’s an Irish name) asked us to turn their two-bedroomed mid-terrace house in Highfields into a three-bedroomed home. “We did consider moving house when we realised I was pregnant,” says Pamela, who is a learning development researcher at the University of Sheffield.

“Then we thought about converting the loft. We called a number of firms, but Re-Style were the only people who seemed enthusiastic and qualified.” The Mckinneys wanted to use the loft to place a birthing pool, so their first child could be born at home.

Says Seoirse: “We wanted to include an en-suite shower room in the conversion so a water supply would be handy for filling the pool. We chose Re-style because their professionalism inspired confidence.” The first stage of the Mckinneys’ loft conversion was installing a stunning staircase up to the attic. This was manufactured to match the existing staircase, and fitted without losing bedroom space on the first floor. Steel beams were fitted to strengthen the floor, and three Velux windows were installed; two in the bedroom, and one in the en-suite shower room, which was fitted with a white suite.

The job you can see here was completed on schedule, a couple of weeks before Pamela gave birth in the birthing pool to her daughter, Aoife, on May 20th.
